[comp.sys.mac] Fresh Start BUGS!

phil@vaxphw.dec.com (Phil Hunt) (08/06/89)

Hi,

I have tried the new INIT called 'Fresh Start'. While the concept is
fantastic, I have found some MAJOR problems that the docs do not talk about...

I have a Mac II running System 6.0.3. 5 meg of memory.

When Fresh Start first comes up...it is supposed to show all your inits in a
'default' environment setting....Well, mine showed NO inits in the window...I
even rebooted to see if it would show up right the second time it ran! Also,
the folders for chooser, startup and cdev documents didn't come up.

I had to check the 'clean system folder at startup' box and reboot....Then the
inits showed up in the window, but they showed up listed as inits
alphabetically past 'Fresh Start' and checked, then inits A-thru 'Fr'. When it
was up, it had indeed put these items in the folders mentioned above..

I rebooted, and the inits were still listed out of alphabetical order, even
though fresh start was the only init in the system folder (others were now in
'Startup Folder'). So his idea of the other executing before Fresh Start was
in error. I even renamed Fresh Start to ' @Fresh Start' to make it first.
No go.

Also, it moves 'Desktop Manager' to 'Startup folder'. Since Fresh Start
executes and manipulates directories before Desktop Mgr patches itself in
now...I get strange and spectacular crashes. Desktop Manager is a 'System
Document', so I do not know why it was put in 'Startup Folder'.

So, I cannot recommend this init, though well intentioned, it is not debugged
very well yet.

I tried it as well. Mac Plus, System 6.0.2, 1 meg.
I installed it, rebooted. After about two minutes of
furious disk action, Bomb ID 02. Had to reboot with
another disk to remove it.

Granted, I did have two things installed directly in the
System heap, Programmer's Online Companion and Fade to
Black. Nonetheless, I'd have to agree that it needs
more debugging.

Worse yet, there was only a mailing address and no
e-mail address to send bug reports. (No, I'm
not going to send a letter off since it's not the
least bit usable in the state it's in...)

Also, FreshStart does not seem to want to co-exist with OnCue, no matter
what I do about it ... -Ed

L.S.

has anyone ever met the following problem:

when double-clicking a MS-Word Document on a Macserve volume, it starts up the
application all right (which is on the same volume). If one tries, after
quitting the application, to double-click the document symbol again, you get
an error message that the applcation is busy or not found. IF ONE MOVES the
application symbol slightly on the desktop, double-clicking the document
brings Word to life again, as if the Desktop File has to be updated every time
in order to enable launching Word from a document.

I surmise the problem is very specific for Word 3.01 in combination with
Macserve 1.2 (the latest, but ancient enough), AND system 6.01. Under system
4.3 everything worked just fine.

Can someone offer a clue on what's going wrong, or better still: what we can
do about it?

This is a known bug of V1.0. V1.0 is also not compatible with renamed
INITs such as Suitcase II if you change its name and others... I have
been beta testing V1.1, and it will be very slick....SOON.....
