I have noticed that sites which provide Macs on a pay-by-the-hour basis often control access to the machines (Mac SEs in most cases) by keeping the mice in a drawer and handing them out to the users. The Macs themselves are left on, with instructions to leave them on at all times. The users plug the mice into the live ADB, and proceed to use the machines, pulling the mouse out when they are done. Is the hoopla about plugging and unplugging ADB devices on a live machine causing physical damage valid, or not? Does it apply only to keyboards? I once started up an SE for a demo, and I forgot to plug in the keyboard. Without thinking about it I just plugged it in while the machine was on - it worked fine. But that's just a one shot anecdote. Are there any "facts" on this issue? The question is not addressed in the ADB Technote (206) or the ADB chapter of IM volume 5 (draft). My copy of the hardware reference is out on loan. Wade Blomgren wade@sdacs.ucsd.edu
