[comp.sys.mac] looking for that SE Fan info

wicinski@nrl-cmf.UUCP (Tim Wicinski) (08/12/89)

just recently my old SE decided to send the fan into noise mode. Maybe
becuase i changed it's position and its more noticable, but...Does
anyone remember where the info is for turning the fan down? i remember
somewhere by cutting a capacitor/resistor you could slow the speed down
and therefore make it quieter. I thought it was in a Tech Note, but I
should realize Apple would never tell you anything like this...

If no one knows, does anyone have specs for a fan I can replace it with
that IS quieter?

thanks

I remember reading somewhere that apple has tied some jitter problems
with the SE screen to the power supply boards with the noisier fans. Is
this true? My screen has been twitching out lately and I hate this noisy
fan. I have been told the fix is free and includes the new quieter fan.
Could someone send me the details so I could refresh the dealers memory
so I don't have to pay for it? Thanks.

I went to my local aurthorized Apple dealer (Leon's in rochester, NY)
and asked them if I could just buy the Apple replacement fan and
do it myself. They informed me that it was not a user serviceable
part, but after begging and pleading they sold it to me for
under $20. I don't know if they made a mistake, or they where
just trying to get rid of me, but I think most third party
fans like SE silencer run about $50, and I think the Dealer
wanted like $80 or more to it for me. I found the process
of installing the fan pretty easy, but I'm not really too
squeemish about taking my Mac apart and soldering to the
video board. (I guess if you did not want to solder, you could
just cut the wires and splice them with wire nuts) The apple
kit did not come with any instructions, but once you get your
mac apart, and the video board out, it's only a matter of
   2 screws and 2 wires.

Standard disclaimer and all that stuff, and the above info
is true to the best of my knowledge, but please don't sue
me if it causes anyone to trash their Mac!

A few months after I bought my SE (two years ago), the official Apple fan
upgrade became available, but for $90 (Can.). I ordered mine (couldn't
stand the noise and jitter). I didn't arrive for 4 months (must have been
popular), but in the mean time my analog board died and was fixed under
warranty. It came with the new fan. As far as I know, that's the only
way to get it free.
