I had a nasty problem with Word recently. I was editing a large file (about 530K) on a Mac Plus (standard, except for having the very, very, very, very original 128K ROMs -- the ones that won't let you boot if any attached SCSI device is turned off. BTW, Apple officially denies that such ROMs exist.) using v. 5 system and Word 3.01. I was doing some rather major global changes on the file, saving about every twenty minutes (every other keystroke, in other words). I did one global change which forewarned me that I wouldn't be able to undo (Fine; I had already checked to be certain I really wanted to do it) because of limited memory. It finished and then told me to close any other windows and save my document because of the memory shortage. I verified that no other window was open and saved the file. It happily purred away to my hard disk (20MB SuperMac DataFrame) for about ten minutes (not an exaggeration; I timed it), got 92% through, and told me it couldn't save the file because there wasn't enough memory. It again told me to close windows & save docs. It wasn't shortage of diskk space; I had about 3.5MB free. It didn't have enough RAM. I was in a major jam. What was I to do -- rush out and buy a RAM upgrade and install it with the machine still on & my document up and running?????? I tried three more times to save the file, and it always got 92% through and then upchucked. I tried to get it to do a fast save; it wouldn't let me select the option. Finally, I got it to save, but only by saving as a Text Only document. Why, for the love of Bellevue, did Word allow me to edit myself into a corner from which it wouldn't let me save?????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? How could it have the document in memory but be unable to save? Will this be fixed in Vapor -- er, uh, WORD -- 4.0? Another beef about 4.0: I got my little newsletter from Microsoft, mailed in June or so, arrived just after Christmas. Mailed in the little card saying "return by 7/15/88 for cheaper upgrade." Got snotty letter back telling me it was past the deadline. WELL, SO IS THE PRODUCT RELEASE!! All this after MS's upgrade dept. categorically denied the existence of any upgrade offer on another fine MS product, Fortran. I got the upgrade letter in the mail the next day. The moral of this paragraph: Microsoft's Upgrade/Customer Disservice Depts. need a major overhaul. Sorry for the verbose post. --Linc Madison, e118-ak@euler.berkeley.edu

I have a Word file that a friend of mine wrote. We tried to open it on my machine with Word 3.01. We got an error saying "Incorrect file type. Open as text only." It then opened the file and displayed what appears to be the formatting characters along with the text. Changing the hidden character switch didn't help. I checked the file type and creator against my files and they look the same. What could be wrong? What can I do to open this file so it looks normal?

I can't be sure, but your description SOUNDS like what my friends tell me when I do their resumes in 4.0, and they take them to Kinko's for laserprinting/copying (and Kinko's in Austin hasn't upgraded yet :). While 3.01 files look fine in 4.0, 4.0 files can't be opened normally by 3.01 (or 3.02). Have your friend choose "Save As..." instead of "Save", and have him/her choose the Word 3.0 file format. Or just upgrade your own version to 4.0 :-). Jay Boisseau jay@emx.utexas.edu

Changing the >hidden character switch didn't help. The original file was created with MSWord 4.0, and MSWord 3.0x will not read it properly. What you need to do is open it in Word 4.0 and save it in Word 3.0x format by clicking on the "File Format..." button in the save dialog box (so you'll have to do "Save As..." instead of "Save"). Of course, if you're using some of the new features it won't work properly, and the fonts might get messed up when you load the document on a different machine. Why is it exactly that MSWord's font information works this way? It's been said that they track fonts by ID instead of by name, but I had heard earlier that the problem was that they were tracking them using the old font numbering scheme instead of the new NFNTs (and supposedly Pagemaker does this too). Anyone know *exactly* what the problem is? -Ivan Internet: captkidd@athena.mit.edu

>Am getting the file not found error when clicking on a MS Word document
This problem is caused by the desktop manager file being present in the system
folder. This is required on both Appleshare servers and large disk drives.
What the desktop manager does is create alternate directories other than the
desktop file that DO NOT HAVE A 288k SIZE RESTRICTION!!
If your desktop file ever reached this size LOOK OUT! The work-a-round from
Apple (unofficially) was to install "desktop manager" into your system folder.
This will not be required when system 7.0 is released - supposedly. This fix isnot without it's price. Unless an APPLICATION HAS BEEN PRESENT ON THE DESKTOP once it will not be found when you click on one of its saved files. This is
true of any Mac application. Not just MS Word. To get this to not occurr then
drag the application to the desktop once, then return it to its folder.
From then on the saved data files will find the application when they are
clicked on.

The file was probably saved in Word 4.0. The format is not downward compatible
with 3.01. There is, of course, an option in 4.0 that lets you save the file in
3.01 format
