[comp.sys.mac] Colony Hints

To James Kin Wah Lee and anyone else who needs help: I'll tell you whatever
I remember.
James, involving the child which is in a one way room and the lift suit
(yes the suit lifts the caskets up for you to carry to your ship--you have to
get them off planet--there are two ways to get them to the ship), you must
find a secret elevator. I beieve that there is an elevator from floors 1-3 or
four. The next level lower has a secret passage that allows you to travel
from 4-5 (or 5-6). There is a special mode of transport that you need to
discover before you can get the 'trapped' child out of the trap room. (have
you noticed any large dodecahedrons? You need to find these before continuing). The best armor and weapons I found to be light/light. The higher settings
seemed to make little or no difference. Once you get above half full (power),
you are unstoppable. So what if the drones hit you a lot, it doesn't do much
damage. (at least that was what I found). Using the higher levels hurts more
than helps since the energy drain is faster. I don't think that wearing the
suit did anything to prevent damage (it made me feel damn helpless). To kill
the drones, just keep shooting till they are dead--sometimes if you hit them
just right, they seem to blow up quickly (like a soft spot or something). With
light armor and weapons, the damage is made up by having slower drain (more
than made up for it i think). If you need more help, ask...

The reactor code is in either the desk drawer in your room (on the ship) or
on the first floor (in a desk). I believe it is the former (you need the docs
for this--the triangle, circle, square translate to the code). About getting
the children back to the ship, I remember having no prob going through the
airlock with the suit on. Well, anyway, there is an alternative and that has
to do with the large dodecahedrons I mentioned in the previous article (oops
I forgot to mention that this is adressed to Jim Collymore). These are found
on one of the bottom most levels (be careful down there--there are bottomless
pits and other traps). Oh, I just saw that you found the teleporters--yeah,
You have to be able to leave the colony in the suit in order to carry the
teleporter into your ship--you might have a messed up copy if you can't
carry stuff out the airlock. About boosting the power, I always used
light/light and never needed any more. I do have access to a colony editor
that allows you to increase the power levels to whatever you want. I also had
the problem of never being able to boost the levels too much beyond the midline
. I guess you peak out around there (a got to half way between 3/4 and 1/2).
For anyone who has won, I found a few weird stuff on the bottommost level--
I think a secret room can be accessed by going to the bottom level with the
suit on (down the stairs.) then by slowly going backwords (toward the stairs)
you wind up in a different room. Some wierd stuff happens there--seems like
the program is buggy.
For anyone who hasn't played colony, it is one of the best games I have played.
Your palms get sweaty -- very real-life like--the three-d environs are great.

I bought a copy of Colony at MacWorld last weekend. It looks like an
okay game, although I hate the stupid decoder-card! [It makes me want
to write a DA that would automate the decoding...] I've sent away for
the color version.

Okay, I'm ready for some hints or advice on the following...

	- I got the reactor-core back in place. But there still
doesn't seem to be anything but emergency power. What
do I have to do in order to really get the reactor going?

I found the Reactor Manual - I can't find any way to read it.

	- There's a room on the lower level that seems to kill me
after about 2-3 steps into it. Any explanations?

	- Am I expected to kill or avoid the robot-tanks (or whatever
they are) when I get out of the ship. I remember seeing someone
talking about the "optimal" settings for ARMOR and WEAPONS.
I seem to drain my life-force before I can either eliminate
	  or outrun all the tanks.

	- The instructions claim that if you hold-down the COMMAND key
while you navigate that the 2-D stuff won't get activated
(making it easier to manuever around airlocks, etc. This
	  doesn't work for me.

You might want to direct mail to me instead of flooding the net
with this stuff. [If there's demand for pooling knowledge, I
can summarize]

Avoid the robot tanks and run like hell - find the entrance to the Colony
(hint-it's big - you'll notice it). You need access to the Colony to get
the reactor core up and running.
