[comp.sys.mac] Apple CD problem

rfl@oddjob.uchicago.edu (Bob Loewenstein) (08/16/89)

I just got an Apple CD SC. I'm running a mac II with system 6.03, 2Mbyte
Ram, no ram cache, no fancy inits or cdevs. When I install the
CD resources/inits using the accompanying floppy and then reboot the
mac with the CD player set to SCSI 3 and turned on, the mac bombs (ID25)
immediately after displaying the CD init. From then on it bombs identically
whether or not the CD is on. I can boot from the floppy and the
mac II hard disk mounts...then I remove the init fromthe system
folder and the mac boots again. What's going on? I have not other
SCSI devices.

Help would be appreciated.

I assume this means that you do have some inits. If you don't think Moire
is fancy think again. It does not work with the Apple CD SC init. There
is at least one other that doesn't work but I never bothered to track it
down I just pulled out a bunch until it worked. I would suggest you try
NO inits or cdevs and see what happens.

Bob,

If you haven't already done so, try renaming the Apple CD-ROM INITs so that
they will load last (ie zApple...). I've found that most of Apple'Cr INITs
aren't very friendly and need to load last.

Hi Fabe,

Actually, I wouldn't rename Apple's Inits. I've had problems, especially
with the audio CD desk accessory that expects to see the name
"Apple CD ROM" in the System folder. The same rule applies for Appleshare.
If you really want to reorder these Inits, I'd get InitPicker from
MicroSeeds, which allows you to reorder any Inits without having to
rename them.

Thanks to all who responded. Indeed, Moire cdev is FANCY. It has worked
for everything else I have used, but NOT the CD driver. If the driver and
Moire cdev are in the System folder simultaneously, the Mac bombs on
boot. It's a shame, because Moire dims both screens. Anyone have
suggestions for another screen saver for multiple screens?

I believe that Pyro dims both screens. I use Fade To Black, which is installed as
a resource in your System file. I don't know if it works with both screens, but due
to its resource nature, it is compatible with damn near anything.

Hi,
I have a slew of INITS including the new Moire 3.0 and an Apple CDRom drive and
its associated inits with NO problem!! (Mac II, 5 meg memory, system 6.0.3)

Are you sure its the CD/Moire causing your problem?
