[comp.sys.mac] trouble downloading from Simtel20

flowers@lanai.cs.ucla.edu (08/19/89)

I haven't been able to successfully download some files from the
Macintosh archives at Simtel. I believe I followed the instructions
in the message that was posted telling how to use the archives,
nevertheless, when I try unstuffing the transferred file, it gives me
a message about bad headers. I have no trouble with ftp and tops-20
(apparently simtel20's file system) in general. Can anybody help?

The details: I'm trying to get the two inigo*.sit files in the hc
section. I ftp there, set mode to tenex, then get the files. Once on
our local Sun, I start up kermit and transfer them to the mac. For
Mac transfer programs I've tried both kermit 9.4 and versaterm 3.10.
I have tried all permutations of binary and text mode on sender and
reciever. A few permutations error out instead of transferring,
however, most transfer a file of the appropriate size but then can't
be unstuffed. Stuffit 1.5.1 says the archive is bad, bad headers,
salvage what I can. After clicking on that error message another
comes up saying unexpected eof. Needless to say, nothing can be
extracted.

The solution (thanks to a speedy response from ohy@beach.cis.ufl.edu),
is to download on the Mac side using Versaterm MacBinary Kermit.

I had followed the instructions of the previously posted Using Simtel
message, using Macintosh Kermit with Mode: Binary and Fork: Data, but
that did not work, and neither did setting Versaterm to Kermit Binary.
Setting Versaterm to MacBinary Kermit (and following the remaining
instructions in the Using Simtel message) does work.

thanks to those who sent suggestions,
