I am interested in buying a 2400-baud external modem for the (512KE)
Macintosh with MNP-5 error correction. Two magazines that I know of,
Byte (June '89) and MacWorld (July '89), featured articles on high-speed
modems - the former did 2400-baud while the latter did 9600-baud modems.
Practically all of the modems were expensive (from a grad student
perspective, > $300). I recently called some of the big Mac mailorder
houses and asked if they carried anything that would fit the bill.
The results were:

1) Practical Peripherals 2400 baud w/ MNP-5 error correction (2400 MACO?).
   ~$225
2) InComm Midget 4800 baud ~$225
3) Promodem 2400M (not MNP-5) but MNP-5 chip will be available Sept 1.
   ~$200 + $50 chip.

These modems were not featured in the articles mentioned above, and I have
no information regarding which protocols they implement, what sort of
throughput to expect, and how sensistive to noise they are.
The InComm modem looks intriguing since it is a "4800" baud modem.

I did check on one modem mentioned in the articles, an E-Tech Bullet modem.
The Byte reviewers gave this modem a double thumbs-up and it was listed
at $395 with educational people getting 20% off. However, when I asked
a sales rep about connecting the modem to the Mac he said there were
handshaking problems. I'm not too knowledgeable about modems ... I always
thought that if you had the right cable (so the signals got routed from the
PC to the right pins), the only other problem was tweaking the software.

So if anyone out there has cheap 2400-baud MNP-5 modem information
(actually, free information about cheap modems) regarding products, prices,
and MAC compatability, I would appreciate some e-mail.
If I get enough information, I will summarize the results and post it
to the appropriate bulletin boards.
