There was some talk recently about Word 4 and the trouble someone had finding its version of Word 3's "Insert Literal." As it was pointed out, command-option-Q does the trick in Word 4. But let me quote from the book _Word 4 Companion_ (Gena B. Cobb, Allan McGuffey, and Judy Mynhier, with Steve Cobb and Mark Crane; copyright 1989, The Cobb Group, Inc., 9420 Bunsen Parkway, Louisville, KY 40220, reprinted without permission), the section on "Using ASCII Codes," pp. 173-174: . "Word allows you to create characters by typing their ASCII codes. Word also can tell you the ASCII code for any character you select in a document. To enter a character by typing in its ASCII code, first make sure that either no text is selected in your document or that your selection is larger than a single character. Then, just type Option-(Command)-q. The prompt _Code_ will replace the page number in the status box at the lower-left corner of your screen, as shown in Figure 5-69 on (p. 174). You can then type any ASCII code, using numbers at the top of the keyboard or NumLock and the numeric keypad, and press Return. Word will insert into your document the character represented by that code. (If you enter an invalid code, Word will beep and take no action until you correct the error.) . "After you've pressed Option-(Command)-q during a Word session, you can simply click on the page number in the status box to invoke the _Code_ prompt. Naturally, you won't use this technikque to create characters that you can type from the keyboard. However, Word's ability to interpret ASCII codes can be very helpful when you need to create certain special symbols or foreign alpahbet characters." . . So, clicking in the Page # box will work like it used to, provided you've done that command-option-q thing first. . . . --Adam Frix-- --Mac Plus Specialist-- --Columbus, OH-- .
