[comp.sys.mac] Speeding up AppleTalk, plain and simple.

markham@phi.cs.unc.edu (Andrew Markham) (08/24/89)

In our department, we have approximately 115 machines on AppleTalk (bridged
across Ethernet LANS of course) and 3 machines on EtherTalk. We have TOPS
running on every machine. We have just recently added a MacII(5MB RAM, 80MB
HD) onto the AppleTalk network and are preparing to use it as a FoxBase+
server. Since only a few machines will have access to this server (we hope),
we would like to increase the speeds at which these machines will be accessing
the server. These ~10 machines exist on different MacLANs. What would be a
cost effective way to do this. We could add EtherTalk boards to each machine,
but would rather keep the AppleTalk connections. First of all, what is the
general consensus on FlashTalk? Is is that much faster? I received mail not
too long ago from someone that said FlashTalk was a fairly poor product and
that he would not recommend it. Also, I remember seeing something (although
it is quite possible that I was dreaming) from Farralon or TOPS (or somewhere)
that offered Ethernet speeds over the AppleTalk network with machines similarly
configured (such as FlashTalk) and AppleTalk speeds with others. Was I
dreaming, or did I really see this.

If this is useful to everyone, I will be willing to post summaries.

Please e-mail all responses. I will be reading this newsgroup, but would
prefer e-mail.

Thank you very much,
