[comp.sys.mac] Ehman drives

jfm@ruddles.sprl.umich.edu.engin.umich.edu (John F. Mansfield) (06/14/89)

Hi there,
I was just reading this week's MacWeek and saw an interesting
ad from Ehman Engineering for their hard drives. The prices seem very
reasonable and they say they use Seagate units. Has anyone had any
experience with this company? Principle issues being warranties,
service and repair policies and turn round times. The price on the 45
meg removable is VERY low at $849. This sounds almost too good to be
true.

Comments People Please?

I almost bought one of these, and did not, on the advice of a friend who
is a QA engineer for a synthesizer manufacturer. He deals with defective
disk drives all the time. His story alleges that though Seagate gained
a very good reputation for IBM PC disk drives, their agreement with IBM
obligates them to sell their very best to IBM, and the seconds to everyone
else. This synth manufacturer no longer uses Seagates. He recommends Connor
Peripherals, I recommend Fujitsu, based on personal experience.

Watch misc.forsale and comp.sys.mac & mac.programmer for ads. I just got
a 135 Meg, 25 msec Fuji M2246SA for $675, and bought a bitchin shoebox case
and power supply for $99 at the Computer Surplus Store in Milpitas CA.

And I have discovered viruses. Any recommendations for formatting software? I will play with SF&I this evening.

How many times do I have to answer this query?

I have been happily using an Ehman's 32M drive for six months. The only
hassle I had was in getting an accurate shipping date. They told me the
delay was a result of demand exceeding supply. In the end, about 2
weeks after the first "shipping date," they shipped the drive UPS
overnight at NO charge to me.

Since then I have been extremely pleased with the drive. It is faster
than the Rodime and Mac drives I have access to, but slightly louder.
The PD software is nice, but takes up a lot of needless space. (I
removed most of it ages ago.)

The customer service is friendly and helpful. When all representatives
were busy they quickly returned my call. Just remember that they are
located in Montana (as I recall).

In summary, I would buy the same drive today.

I've had an Ehman 800K floppy drive for a couple of years with no problems.
Don't know about their hard drives, but at least the company has been in
business for a while.

Does anybody out there have any experience with Ehman HDs and removable HDs.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I just got an Ehman 30+ external about 2 weeks ago. Runs much faster
than my Warp9 (now Mirror Technologies) 20MB. All SCSI tests show
better access times than advertised.

Only problem is that they usually have a 7-10 day backlog.

With a 30 or > HD, you get PC Tools for the Mac. This includes HD
optimizer, undelete, etc.

It's a great drive, and the customer service at Ehman is very good.

Has anyone had experience with the Ehman hard drives? They're hundreds
cheaper than most other brands. How do they fare in performance, quality,
etc. ?? Is there anything about them to be wary of?

Thanks,

Lotsa questions about Ehman drives... are they any good... well, I might dire
you to this months MacUser report on hard drives in the 40 mb range.... from
what I can tell, Ehman fared *very* well, was among the fastest of the drives
in its class (those using Seagate) and had the best price.
Geoff.

Steve Costa of BMUG, who sees more dead drives than anyone, has been
known to suggest that Ehman drives make good doorstops & paperweights.
