PROBLEM: Imported draw graphics (PICT) will show alignment errors when reduced (e.g. 60 percent) within MS Word (both vs. 3.x and 4.0). The problem does not occurr at all reduction percentages and not for all figures: If I add something to a problem figure (eg a rectangle), which makes the bounding box around the entire figure bigger, and cut-paste-reduce the new figure, then the problem sometimes disappears. This seems to indicate some sort of round off error; on a 72 DPI Mac screen I can understand that, but 300 DPI laserwriter output has the same problem. It appears MS Word is to blame because, -1- Graphics was drawn using a course grid, which makes absolutely sure the ends of lines are exactly on the same coordinates (MacDraw) -2- Printing the graphics at the same reduction percentage from MacDraw, or from a desktop publisher (PICT import) will result in correctly alligned output QUESTIONS: -Q1- Has anyone else experienced this problem? -Q2- Solution? -Q3- Work-around? -Q4- Explanation why this problem occurrs? I've had this kind of trouble when I copy PICTs from MacDraw to Word and the Fractional Widths settings are not the same in both programs. This is particularly annoying because MacDraw II defaults to Fractional Widths *on* (at least in early versions), while Word defaults to *off*. To work around, either turn off Fractional Widths in MacDraw and re-copy your PICT, or turn on Fractional Widths in Word. --Peter Poorman Control Data Corporation 9894 Bissonnet, Suite 229 Houston, Texas 77036 pwp@shamash.UUCP (I think -- or try pwp@shamash.cdc.com)

Sorry Pete, No Go: fractional widths only influences text, I can demo the problem using only rectangles and/or lines drawn on a grid to assure allignment. Reduction in MS Word will produce results that are not alligned, i.e. the corners of the rectangles no longer meet. I tried your suggestion against my intuition and found it NOT producing the desired improvement. Anyone else? Frank de Bruyn, Email: rcstfdb@eutrc3.nl Eindhoven University of Tech., the Nethrelands.

I had some problems getting some of my drawings to align as well. I eventually didn't fix it and let it ride. However, I found a few ways to to work around it, basically I remember being careful in my scaling of drawing parts within draw before importing into Word. This was 1.9.5, I think Draw II fixed the problem (at least partially). -- Rusty "No Bugs" Hodge, 1588 N.
