FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SYMANTEC SHIPS MACINTOSH PASCAL 3.0 FOR
EDUCATIONAL USERS

Cupertino, CA -- August 21, 1989 -- Symantec Corporation today announced
shipment of a new release of Macintosh Pascal, the popular educational
programming environment. Version 3.0 of Macintosh Pascal is an interpreted,
interactive programming environment created specifically for introductory
programming and computer literacy courses. The new release is available to
educational users at a single unit price of $62.50 with quantity discounts
available from Edutech of Pacific Grove, California, SymantecUs exclusive
educational distributor.

ROur research shows that Computer Science departments have the largest
installed base of personal computers of any of the academic disciplines within
higher education,S said Burt Cummings, director of higher education marketing
and sales at Apple Computer. RMany of our customers have been asking for a
new release of Macintosh Pascal, so Symantec is clearly filling a key customer
need in this important segment of our market.S

RThis release of Macintosh Pascal reaffirms SymantecUs continued support for
all programmers, from beginners to professionals,S said Gordon E. Eubanks Jr.,
president and CEO of Symantec. RMacintosh Pascal is ideal for introductory
programming students and is especially popular among schools with older
systems that have less than one megabyte of memory. Those students who
move on to advanced programming can easily transition to THINK Pascal,
SymantecUs compiler-based, professional programming environment."

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Macintosh Pascal is an interpreted version of ANSI standard Pascal that
leverages the Macintosh graphical user interface to make programming easy to
learn. Like SymantecUs professional development environments, Macintosh
Pascal includes an integrated editor and a built-in source-level debugger. The
Macintosh Pascal editor automatically formats Pascal programs and catches
syntax errors, making it easy for students to locate typing errors. The built in
source-level debugging tools make it easy to understand and correct program
logic.

Macintosh Pascal version 3.0 adds support for new system software and
networks. The new release runs on all Macintosh computers from the Macintosh
512Ke to the Macintosh IIcx and is compatible with Apple's MultiFinder.
Enhanced network file support allows users to print the programUs output to a
networked printer and to launch the program from a server. The new release
simplifies installation and allows users to print and save text or drawing
windows.

Macintosh Pascal was originally developed in 1984 for Apple Computer by
THINK Technologies, now the Language Products Group of Symantec
Corporation, and was the first Pascal available for the Macintosh. This is the first
update to Macintosh Pascal since Apple transferred the marketing rights for the
product to Symantec Corporation in July 1988.

TARGET MARKETS

The easy-to-use, integrated environment of Macintosh Pascal version 3.0 is
designed specifically for novice programming students. Schools with a mixture
of Macintosh computers appreciate the convenience of a development
environment that runs on all popular Macintosh systems. The program runs
with a minimum configuration of one 800K disk drive and 512K RAM. Macintosh
Pascal is currently used to teach programming in courses at Drexel University,
the University of California, Berkeley, the US Coast Guard Academy, and other
educational institutions.
