[comp.sys.mac] Another "Help me, I'm lost" question..

ron_b@apollo.HP.COM (Ronald Buttiglieri) (08/25/89)

Looking at the recent sea of postings regarding problems, I might as well dive
in..

The scenario: Running either Multi or Finder on an SE with 2.5M, sys6.0.2,
60+M Ehman HD, I used Stuffit1.5.1 to archive some files. When I tried to
copy an archive (which did contain a 'folder' in the archive if that matters)
from the HD to a diskette, the "Copying" dialog box appeared, but the thermometer
was completely full (grey) from the start and it seemed to read/write
repetitively in a very rhythmic and short beat. I let the copy run its course,
and it seemed to work okay. (Note that the diskette was empty prior to the copy,
so I ruled out any problems of disk space) I tried to copy a second archive.
The "copying.." dialog box appeared, but no 'watch' cursor. My Mac then went
into LaLa Land.

After resetting the computer I tried another (similar) archive to another disk
and found the same scenario, i.e. full thermometer at the start. I didn't try
the second step because in the last attempt the computer seized up during the
"Updating the desktop.." phase; not too healthy to reset at that point.

It just appears to be very flakey, not too detremental (yet). Has anyone ever
seen or heard anything like this before? I'm open to any and all input.

Thanks,

Ron

Yes, this has happened to me quite a few times. I usually open the file
up in the proper application, and re-save it. This seems to cure it for
the most part. It is indeed a really strange problem.
