It's been a while since I posted my "Mac Lab Security" software info on the net. I certainly received more requests for what I found then the responses. Followings are the two responses I received. Appreciated your help! My plan is, other than the suggested softwares, I will try a few other commercial/shareware/public_domains out. Titles I found:GuardDog, Password (application), Lockout(sp?), The night watch, MacSafe..etc. Just hope they offer some kind of MBG. ========================================================================= gford%nunki.usc.edu@usc.edu (Gregory Ford) writes: I have an init here that I use that doesn't protect things, but it at least logs what applications are run and when they are run. It doesn't tell you who ran them (outside of logging the chooser name which could be anybody), but at least it tells you what was run and at what time. There is also an init called MacPassword that requires the user to type in a password at startup, however, this may not be good for a user lab. There is the guest feature, and if activated, allows only partial (or total depending on setup) access to certain folders. Alas, this is not full proof either, as someone with ResEdit could override the protection (it only locks, makes invisible, and something else... to the folder). But, every little bit counts, and thus, you weed out just a few more people. At the present time I am using SilverLining from LaCie. It allows to protect a hard disk from mounting (even with the floppy). Unfortunately, it does not work (at least the version that I have, they have a new now) with Apple 80 meg drive and Syquest drives (45 meg removables) made non-Lacie manufacturers. The driver is good. Someone on the net said that it was the best hard disk driver on the market bar none. I just came back from MacWorld and I saw a program called AME (ACCESS managed environment). It looks goooood. Several levels of security (mount, read, write) for disks, folders, files. I have not seen it in action and have no idea about compatibility. It is by CAsady & Greene. List price 1 unit 279, 5-units 895, 10-units 1495. They found a bug at the show, so they will fix it and ship it some time in September. I will buy one copy to evaluate it for our department. Mail order places will probably sell it for 60% of list. Of course, I have no affiliation with the above mentioned companies. Also check out DiskLock from Fifth Generation Systems (800) 873-4384, and a package from Magma software (the name escapes me) that provides Appleshare -like logins and the same volume/folder protection that AppleShare uses, except that it runs on your own machine.
