[comp.sys.mac] Suitcase II config

bruceh@mentor.com (Bruce Holm) (09/02/89)

The following request is addressed to Steve Brecher but others are free to
comment on this if you have suggestions:

Steve,

I would like to hear your suggestion for a good way to configure my Mac using
Suitcase II. Ideally, I would like to have each font family in its own suitcase,
such as one called Bookman 9-24, another Palatino 9-24, etc. And I like to keep
each DA a separate suitcase since that is the way they come.

Well if I do this, I have to extend the default limit of 12 in Suitcase II to be
some fairly high number (~30 for example) so that I could have 15 DAs and 15 font
families. But this ties up memory space and increases boot time.

Alternatives are to put all fonts in the System using Font/DA Mover. This is
not convenient if you want to move fonts around or upgrade Systems. Doing this
enables me to keep the suitcase limit in SCII to ~15, just for DAs.

Another option is to combine font families into big groups, such as Laser fonts,
IW fonts, Pic Fonts, etc. I don't like this very well because it is not obvious
what fonts are in each group and which sizes are there.

What would you suggest as the most efficient use of memory, the least time to
boot, and the most portable setup?? Since you wrote the program (which is an
excellent product, I might add), I figure you know memory vs time to boot
tradeoffs and what quantity combinations of DAs and fonts would work best for
me.

I have a 2M Mac Plus with a 40M hard disk. I rarely run Multifinder but like
the option to. I use both IW-1 and Laser fonts since I own an IW at home and
have access to a LW printer at work for printing stuff I layout with PM-3 or
Word-4, etc.

Any help you can give would be most appreciated. I am sorry if this imposes
on your time too much.

Thanks!!!
