[comp.sys.mac] Theldrow, Excel & Lotus

barner@udel.EDU (Ken Barner) (08/18/89)

What a combination hu? I have two questions I hope someone can answer.

First, the most important question, concerning a game, of course.
I have just become interested in Theldrow but I keep getting
divide by zero bombs every time I'm about to kill something. I have
tried the game on a II and SEx with the same results. Do I have
a bad copy or won't Theldrow run on a 680x0 machine?

Second, the less important work question. I read something that
implied that Excel can read Lotus files. Is this true? I am considering
the purchase of Excel or WingZ and the ability to read Lotus files
would be a big plus. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

The following posting includes some assistance with the dropping bug,
and inevitably hints at a fragment of an important part of the game
solution, although not in a way which would spoil the game. However, if
you don't even want to see this obtuse hint, don't read past the ^L.

Firstly, I managed to complete Theldrow on a Mac SE/30, so it is
possible on 680?0 machines. I only encountered the combat bug twice, so
it wasn't a major problem for me. I wasn't able to determine the
specific conditions which produced it, so I can only suggest using
Cmnd-Q regularly, followed by Cmnd-D, to keep a saved copy of your
    character file.

I found the dropping bug much more of a nuisance, which usually produces
a bomb if you discard something carelessly. The rule is :
Drop Things Only Where You Found Them
although even this isn't 100% reliable. If you want to get rid of
something elsewhere, put it in the Magic Chest instead. There is still a
problem with this, which I can only explain by revealing a small
    something about the game solution.

The dropping bug is an especial irritation, because completion of the
game specifically requires you to drop certain objects at places other
than where you find them. By painful trial and error I formulated the
following procedure to get around the error.
x quit and save your character file, then restart
o face towards the centre (once you have found the relevant
location, you will know what I mean by that)
o click on the object to be dropped, to bring up its associated
	   description
o press RETURN to acknowledge the message, then drag the object to
the centre of the location display
x cross your fingers, close your eyes, touch wood, invoke your
	   favourite deity
o take your quivering, sweat soaked finger off the mouse button to
   	   drop the selected object
x open one eye v-e-r-y slowly while saying "There is no bomb. There
is no bomb. There is no bomb."
(You may dispense with the stages marked 'x'.)

I found this procedure to work about four times out of five, whereas
simply dropping an object on arriving at the required location would
bomb every time. Don't ask me to explain it.
