I haven't been following Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software lately. The field has been changing rapidly. I'm looking for pointers to software to take scanned images and convert it to ASCII text. My current requirements are modest: conversion to MS WORD formatted text is not required (or even desireable). Some considerations are: What scanners are supported? How long does conversion take? Is there a "batch mode" (unattended conversion for multiple files, for example, at night)? Are there any real time converters (conversion during scan)? Error rates? System requirements (mem size, disk...)? Cost? I currently have Thunderscan on a Mac II with 2 Meg RAM (though it is getting cheap enough to be upgraded to 5 soon).
