And now for a simple (probably silly) question. Do the new FDHD drives need those stupid little yellow disks that stop the old 800k drives from flopping around when you move your MAC across the room etc. I've looked through most of the documentation and there is no mention of a need for them (or that you don't need it!) I can only assume that it isn't necessary (?). BTW this has been asked before, but I didn't see any replies, does any one make an external FDHD drive (how much is it and is it reliable?) Thanks again, Michael.

Not a silly question at all. I have heard from several sources that not only are the yellow inserts not nescessary in a FDHD, that using one can actually destroy your drive. So unless one came with your machine when you got it (it didn't with my SE/030) I would not use one. Barry Eynon barry@playfair.stanford.edu -ARPA ...!decwrl!shasta!playfair!barry -USENET

you don't need AND SHOULDN'T USE the yellow plastic drive protector with SuperFloppy drives (FDHD). Yes, two companies that i know of sell external FDHD drives. One is called Apple Computer, Inc. in Cupertino California. They have many thousands of dealers around the country, so you should have no trouble finding one. i forget the name of the other company, but i wouldn't buy their drive because it won't read/write 400-800K Mac disks, only 1.44 Mac/MS-DOS and 720K MS-DOS. -shabtai (e-mail addresses/long sig follow) UUCP: uunet!pyramid!cdp!sklein | BitNet: cdp!sklein%labrea@stanford Internet: cdp!sklein@arisia.xerox.com | Phone: (301) 270-2250 "You can't always get what you wan't" -- Rolling Stones "You can get it if you really want" -- Jimmy Cliff

Regarding those yellow plastic inserts for floppy drives: From this discussion before: Use them with single and double density floppy drives. Do not use them with FDHD drives - it will damage them. Jim Cook : J.COOK@ENM.PRIME.COM The above information is my own.
