What is a good general reference on Word 4? Preferably
something with a good index and good, thorough explanations of
the various features of Word 4 and how to use them.

I bought the _Word 4 Companion_ from the Cobb Group (9420 Bunsen Parkway,
Louisville, KY 40220) and am very happy with it. From the Preface, p.
xiii (reprinted without permission):
"Most software manuals provide an abundance of technical information
about their products. They present every command, every option, every
syntax rule in painstaking detail. Unfortunately, none of this
encyclopedic information is geared toward helping you do your job....On
the other hand, many of the books we've seen on word processing packages
go to the opposite extreme--they are almost completely tutorial in nature,
offering little or no refernce informatio nto help you apply taechnical
concepts to your work.....We've tried to strike a balance with _Word 4
Companion_--to give you the technical information you need to use MS Word
effectively and to teach by example. For that reason, this book is
organized functionally, rather than by command name. We try to walk you
through the steps you need to develop different types of documents,
introducing new commands and new concepts as they logically arise."

In my opinion, they do this very well. It's nicely written, bigger than
anything (i.e., includes a lot of stuff) and well-referenced. Suggested
retail price: $22.95. I might add, it's a lot easier to handle for
reference than MS's three-ring notebooks.
