Having solved my last hardware problem (The Case of the Thin White Line), I now have another one to bring to your attention: The Case of the Four Yellow Flashes. I have a Mac SE, with an Apple 20MB internal drive. It's just out of warranty :-( which probably explains this mess. I turned it off (using Shutdown from the Finder, waiting about 30 secs, then turning it off and unplugging it) this morning. When I tried turning it on about half an hour ago, it wouldn't boot. The drive sounded like it was doing something (at least making a sort of droning noise, more or less like usual). However, it never did any seeks. The yellow drive light stayed on for a long time at the beginning, then went off. Eventually, the Mac brought up the "insert disk" (flashing "?") screen. Every cycle, the floppy drive whirred, and the hard disk light flashed four times. Still no seek noise from the hard disk, though. Booting from a floppy and running HD20SC Setup resulted in a message that "no appropriate drives were found" or something like that. On the off chance that PRAM was somehow screwing things up, I zapped it; no effect. Trying to boot with my Mac at various angles (on its face, on its back, on the sides) didn't make any change. Holding down the mouse button at boot time (which causes the floppy to try and eject) caused the hard disk light to flash once every time the floppy tried to eject (in a 4-1-4-1 pattern instead of just 4-4-4, which is its pattern without the eject attempt). So, all you hardware people...what's wrong? How much will it cost to fix it? Am I better off trying to get this fixed, buying an SE/30, or trading this to the person I just sold my old 512KE to??? Send results to "rang@cs.wisc.edu" and I will summarize. Many, many thanks in advance!
