I am having problems with the manual for the HPDJ public-domain DeskJet driver. I have downloaded it from two different archives: sumex and rascal (? - address 128.83.144.1) and the problem is the same. The file cannot be opened by any application. I checked with ResEdit and the file has a Type and Creator of "nX^D". I can change the type to TEXT and the creator to MSWD and then open the file with WORD. However, the resulting file has a bunch of garbage and only a small amount of readable text. Since the file is the same at both archives, I am assuming it got downloaded this way from its creators. Either that or I am missing out on something. Has anyone had any luck getting this file recently? On sumex it is /info-mac/util/deskjet-driver-manual.hqx. On rascal it is /mac/printing-support/HPDJ_Manual.pit.bin. I converted the sumex file with BinHex then Unpit. The rascal file must be ftp'd to a unix host, then downloaded with MacBinary Kermit, then run through Unpit. If anyone knows of something I'm doing wrong, please let me know. I'd also settle for someone e-mailing me a 'good' copy of this file if they have one. Thanks. It can be read with either the commercial version of WriteNow or the demo version, known as "Sample WriteNow" and available on sumex in info-mac/demo/writenow-part[123].hqx. The demo version is identical to version 1.0 of the commercial version, except that it prints "Printed With Sample WriteNow" or something at the top of all printed output. Earle R. Horton

The HPDJ driver manual can only be printed out by the companion BatchPrint application. Luckily BatchPrint has a crude screen page preview function that you can use to read enough of the manual to get your DeskJet setup properly to then print the manual out on your DeskJet! It's all very Catch-22'ish. -- Michael Connick via cmhGate - Net 226 fido<=>uucp gateway Col, OH UUCP: ...!osu-cis!n8emr!cmhgate!7!520!412!Michael.Connick INET: Michael.Connick@f412.n520.z7.FIDONET.ORG

Although the manual WAS originally created using WriteNow, by distributing it in BatchPrint spool file format anyone will be able to print it out regardless of what WP program they might happen to own. -- Michael Connick via cmhGate - Net 226 fido<=>uucp gateway Col, OH UUCP: ...!osu-cis!n8emr!cmhgate!7!520!412!Michael.Connick INET: Michael.Connick@f412.n520.z7.FIDONET.ORG

You can preview the spool file in BatchPrint, and also print it on any Macintosh-compatible printer. It is, of course, more convenient to have WriteNow handy. The manual is good reading even if you don't have an HPDJ. Earle R. Horton
