[comp.sys.mac] Manual for HPDJ Driver is bad

robin@csuchico.edu (Robin Goldstone) (08/22/89)

I am having problems with the manual for the HPDJ public-domain
DeskJet driver. I have downloaded it from two different archives:
sumex and rascal (? - address 128.83.144.1) and the problem is the
same. The file cannot be opened by any application. I checked with
ResEdit and the file has a Type and Creator of "nX^D". I can
change the type to TEXT and the creator to MSWD and then open the
file with WORD. However, the resulting file has a bunch of garbage
and only a small amount of readable text.

Since the file is the same at both archives, I am assuming it got
downloaded this way from its creators. Either that or I am
missing out on something. Has anyone had any luck getting this file
recently? On sumex it is /info-mac/util/deskjet-driver-manual.hqx.
On rascal it is /mac/printing-support/HPDJ_Manual.pit.bin. I converted
the sumex file with BinHex then Unpit. The rascal file must be ftp'd
to a unix host, then downloaded with MacBinary Kermit, then run through
Unpit.

If anyone knows of something I'm doing wrong, please let me know.
I'd also settle for someone e-mailing me a 'good' copy of this file
if they have one.

Thanks.

The file in question is a WriteNow document. It can be read with
either the commercial version of WriteNow or the demo version, known
as "Sample WriteNow" and available on sumex in
info-mac/demo/writenow-part[123].hqx. The demo version is identical
to version 1.0 of the commercial version, except that it prints
"Printed With Sample WriteNow" or something at the top of all printed
output.

[Deleted info.]
This is a WriteNow signature and you need WriteNow to view the file.

The HPDJ driver manual can only be printed out by the companion
BatchPrint application. Luckily BatchPrint has a crude screen page
preview function that you can use to read enough of the manual to get
your DeskJet setup properly to then print the manual out on your DeskJet!
It's all very Catch-22'ish.

Are you SURE about that? The HPDJ manual that I got was in BatchPrint
spool file format. In fact, the manual makes reference to that fact as a
great boon to portability. Although the manual WAS originally created
using WriteNow, by distributing it in BatchPrint spool file format anyone
will be able to print it out regardless of what WP program they might
happen to own.

The package I got included both the WriteNow document and the
BatchPrint spool file document. You can preview the spool file in
BatchPrint, and also print it on any Macintosh-compatible printer. It
is, of course, more convenient to have WriteNow handy. The manual is
good reading even if you don't have an HPDJ.

the manual was made available by the author both in WriteNow
format as well as in spooled format. both versions are available
for FTP from RASCAL in mac/printing in files named:

 160 -rwxrwxr-x 1 werner 151552 May 24 04:19 HPDJ_Manual.pit.bin*
 192 -rwxrwxr-x 1 werner 188416 May 24 04:20 HPDJ_Spooled_Manual.pit.bin*

if you only received the "spooled" version, please get in touch
with your source and ask for the unspooled version.
