Hi. This is a question that was asked a few weeks ago, but was either never responded to or I simply missed the answer. When formatting a 40Mb Apple HD using the "Maximum Macintosh" option, why does the Apple HD Setup program (v2.0 - came with sys 6.0.2) leave an unusable free space at the end of the Macintosh partion? Last night, I reformatted my drive using the "custom" option and specified the entire drive (less driver). Now I have something like an extra 1900kb of disk space and it works fine. Neither Disk Express nor Disk First Aid had anything bad to say when I examined the volume. Is adding this extra space potentially a bad thing to do? Please email any responses, as due to the volume in this group, I sometimes miss postings. Thanks. -- -- -- | | --- ----- --- |\ | ---- ---- ----- | | | | | |___ | |___| | \ | | __ | __ | | | | |___| ____| | | | | \| |____| |____| | ...there is no substitute (except a ZR1 'vette!) John S. Because of the number of times I've seen the question, I'm posting this reply anyway. I'll mail a copy to John directly. Extra space exists on all hard disks partitioned by HD SC Setup's default partitioning options. A decision was made to create standard default partitions because of Apple's need to source drives from different manufacturers. Since few hard drives, even from the same manufacturer, have identical storage capacity, we decided to make standard partition sizes for each of the Apple Hard Drives - 20, 40, 80 and 160. Standard partition sizes reduce support problems caused by restoring image backups between different sized partitions and worrying about "Bill's drive having 2.8K more space than mine." etcetera. Other than the above, I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't use the custom partition option to make whatever sized partition you desire. -Dave -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Dave Wells, Apple Computer, Inc.
