[comp.sys.mac] Questions about 4 Meg Simms

MIKEA@pucc.Princeton.EDU (Michael Antolovich) (09/01/89)

These questions are directed to people who really know the answers

There is a lot of talk about new big SIMMS which will hold 4Megs, so
I should be able to put four of these in my Mac SE30 to get 20 Megs total
(I have 4Meg now). Somewhere along the line I heard that the MAC will not
recognise this added memory (except when using AUX ?) Is this true, am I
saving my empty SIMM slots for nothing ? Should I buy the relatively
cheap 1 Meg SIMMS to give me 8Meg (should I wait for System 7.0 and get
virtual 8Meg ? BTW if you already have 8 Meg will Virtual Mem be any
benefit ? Besides faster)
Any way, basically will 4 Meg (or larger) SIMMS work on the Macs or not.
                                                         Thank you,
                                                         Michael.

Hi,

4 MB SIMMs do come in two models: One who is very expensive, which consists
of a normal soj diplomate SIMM which has eight 4 megabit Chips on it;
and the other, really cheap right now (approx. $ 5800 - $ 6000 for one
quadrupel for end users) consists of thirtytwo 1 MB Chips. The disadvantage
however is that it won't fit into an SE/30, because it physically won't
fit.

4 MB SIMMs generally only work in Macs with a 68030 processor, or in a Mac
II with 'super drive upgrade'.

You can only use four SIMMs at a time (like before with Mac IIs).

You cannot use more than eight megabytes for your Mac operating system
(except A/UX) until System Software 7.0 is available. However, you can use
the rest of available memory for a ramdisk (some companies can provide
them). Try to copy your 5MB system folder together with your most used
applications into a ramdisk and fasten seat belts... .

The following memory configurations are now possible:

16 MB	4 x 4MB
17 MB	4 x 4MB	+ 4 x 256 KB
20 MB	4 x 4MB + 4 x 1MB
32 MB	8 x 4MB
