[comp.sys.mac] Prob w/ HP SCSI disc on MAC II

We're trying to use an HP 7959S (SCSI disc) with a MAC II.
Problem: disc checking utilities and formatting work without
a hitch, but the initialization fails with a system error
(sometimes error 1 or 36).

Any suggestions on what's wrong or how to get past this?
