Well, it finally happens. My 5-1/4" HD80 Quantum drive in my Mac II is starting to go. First, it would not reliably spin up. Now it has developed a habit of randomly retracting the heads - requiring a power-down and power-up sequence to restore. The drive still is spinning, but when I took the cover off of the Mac, the drive case was VERY hot (it's still hot, running with the cover off). It's over a year old, so I guess I'll have to replace it on my own. There has GOT to be a better way to do this. Has anyone tried a 3-1/2" drive with an attached fan? How about an external drive array with redundancy? I need some industrial strength storage to protect me from my toy computer. Marc Kaufman (kaufman@Neon.stanford.edu)
