Has anyone used or know anything about the quality, reliability, etc. of the RasterOps 24 bit "ColorBoard 264"? A friend is thinking of getting one for his MacIIcx. Please E-mail replies, and I'll post a summary if there is enough interest. Bill Buikema wjb1@tank.uchicago.edu

I noticed that the original ad for the RasterOps 24-bit ColorBoard 264 in MacWorld prominently displayed the price at $995. This month's MacWorld has the same ad, except there is a small period (wrong size, too far away from the text) and a lot of white space where the big, bold $995 used to be. Anybody know what the price really is? How about Availability? Competition? Doug Felt I saw a mailorder company list this board for something around $800. Thought it had to be a typo, but I wouldn't mind finding out differently.

How about Availability? A Mail Order place called MacOne in NY had an ad in MacWeek for $719, "now shipping." Best price I've seen. This sounds like a killer board. Any performance stats for 24-bit mode v. 8-bit mode v. etc? How about in comparison to Apple's 8 bit, or their competitors? Certainly, using a Brooktree 473 RAMDAC (look at its picture) is a great idea. Awaiting a good review summary, here or in print... Greg Sorensen sorensen@athena.mit.edu or sorensen@imager.mit.edu

How about in comparison to Apple's 8 bit, A friend of mine was given one of the first units in repay for some help he gave with their demo software. His casual observations: In 8-bit mode it has performance on a par with Apple's 1-bit mode. In 24-bit mode it has performance barely noticeably slower than Apple's 8-bit mode. >or their competitors? dunno. --scott -- Scott Truesdell

This sounds like your friend isn't running 32-bit Quickdraw, which is considerably faster in the intermediate-depth modes.
