[comp.sys.mac] Hard Drive Replacement

barry@primerd.prime.com (09/20/89)

About three weeks ago I posted a query about a Seagate hard drive that
wouldn't spin up (thanks again to all of you who responded). My drive
was covered by an Apple service bulletin dated about May 26, 1989, so I
received a new replacement drive at no cost. The three week delay was
caused by fact that once I got my drive spinning again, I didn't push
hard to get the replacement done soon. If I had pushed, I'm sure I
could have shaved 7-10 days from the replacement time.

I was expecting to get aother Seagate ST157N - instead, Iwas given a
Quantum Q250, which is quite a bit noisier than the old Seagate. I
could barely hear the Seagate when it was spinning; there was virtually
no noise at all when it was reading or writing (I had to put my hand on
the end of the case) to feel if it was working. The Quantum is
painfully loud and makes a distinct clicking sound whenever it seeks.

Are they all like that, or did I get a particularly noisy Quantum? Am I
better off with the Quantum or should I insist on another Seagate?

Thanks, Barry

The consensus of the replies I received is that I lucked out when I was
given the Quantum; I should live with the increased noise and be
thankful that I can get my work done faster!
