I have a deal for a 50-Meg. Internal hard disk by Peripheral Land from M.A.C. in Berkeley. The price is, I believe, under $1000. I'm not sure if this includes installation. I have a Mac SE with two internal floppies, and boy am I hurting for a hard disk. I'm wondering if any of you netters have had any experiences, good or bad, with Peripheral Land's hard disks. Or, for that matter, with M.A.C.'s service. Oh, yes: the guy I talked to at M.A.C. told me that one of my internal floppies will be put into a case, so I could use it as an external floppy. Neat, huh? acl {ihnp4,backbones}!ucbvax!bartleby.berkeley.edu!alexlau "Who needs a computer when you've got the greatest computer ever created sitting inside your own head?" "I do."

Does anybody have any recommendations/comments on internal hard drives for the SE. A friend of mine is wondering whether to purchase one with the Apple hard drive included or to buy a drive seperately. Thanx, -Steve

It's my standard recommendation to NOT buy an SE with an internal hard drive, since if (WHEN) the drive goes bad, you'll lose the entire computer to repairs. If an external goes bad, you can still get some work done with two floppies. --- Alex

Besides, the apple disk is noisy and (maybe because of the noise) seems to be slower. On my home system I got an internal 30M drive and at work we have used 40M external drives only because we had no choice in buying the apple hard disk. The external disk was so much nicer that I don't use the apple disk for anything right now. Maybe I'll load it up with tech notes or something. Boththird party disks came from Optima and I've been real satisfied as a customer with them. < dave

The biggest reason not to buy an internal hard drive for an SE is, if the thing breaks, your whole machine is down while the drive is being fixed. For the most part. 'Course, if you like opening your own case, you can just take the drive out yourself, put the machine back together, and have a one-drive SE to use. You'll find out that's not very feasible. One-drive Macs are unuseable. Buy a two-drive SE and an external drive. Should the drive be out of commission, you still have a two drive machine which is minimally useable. The tradeoff here is, of course, portability. If you need that, get an internal drive. Examine your needs and make the choice accordingly. BTW, you can get third party internal drives that sit inside a two-drive machine, on top of the top floppy. That gives portability and useability if the drive goes south. A caveat: don't buy the SE/20 from Apple. ALL third-party hard drives have longer warranties and many have better support. GCC is my favorite of late; they're doing the Jasmine pricing/direct sales thing, but adding the product/customer support that Jasmine has abandoned of late. Chuq von Rospach tells me that Jasmine got to be popular a few years ago when GCC was having problems with its original HyperDrive (internal) for the Plus. Now, it's Jasmine that's having problems and GCC that's taking over Jasmine's market. --Adam-- -- Adam Frix via cmhGate - Net 226 fido<=>uucp gateway Col, OH UUCP: ...!osu-cis!n8emr!cmhgate!200!Adam.Frix INET: Adam.Frix@f200.n226.z1.FIDONET.ORG
