[comp.sys.mac] Air Force, Macs, and games

In a recent _Air_Force_ magazine, there was an article on a battle
simulation system named Simnet. It networked flight simulators, tank
simulators, and a few other simulators across the world. The article
mentioned that the system was built around the Macintosh computer
(although they never mentioned the Mac or showed any Macs after that
one sentence).

The papers have recently mentioned the the Air Force's decision to
purchase 10 to 80 thousand Mac IIs (I have no idea if this is related
to Simnet). The paper said they would be used for everything from
word processing to battle management.

I hope some game manufatures picks up on this and designs some battle
simulation games. I think it would very interesting to be playing a
battle game on the SAME computers the Air Force uses to plan their
battle strategy.

PS. Anyone know of any battle simulation programs out there already.
I would love to get the Ancient Art of War, but it won't run on an
SE/30.

...and the Ancient Art of War at Sea won't run on a Mac II (what I have),
so it's boring too. I can recommend the Universal Military Simulator
as a fun product. It works on my machine, and probably works on the SE/30,
though I don't know for sure. UMS is a system that allows many historical
and fantastical scenarios to be modeled. If you're familiar with board game
or miniatures simulations, much of the system will be familiar to you,
including the fairly standard unit designations. I have downloaded many
custom scenarios from various networks, simulating everything from the
Romans to Star Fleet. It's been fun, though of course I wish for
bigger, faster, and more flexibility!
