[comp.sys.mac] Looking for inexpensive LaserWriters

paisley@cme.nist.gov (Scott Paisley) (09/21/89)

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I must have missed it.
What is the least expensive laserwriter I can use on a macplus system?
This would only be used from the one mac, so sharing of the laser is
not an advantage. Also, will the less expensive laserwriters work as
well as an apple laserwriter? Meaning, do they print at 300dpi, and
will I have access to several fonts?

Thanks for any information...

Check out the HP LaserJet IIP. List price $1495, but it's available for
$995 some places. The software and cable (MacPrint, by Insight Systems)
are available for $79 from MacWarehouse (list $149). This is a real live
300 dpi laser printer, with nice fonts and everthing.

Caveats: I haven't actually seen it working.
I don't know what performance would be like from a MacPlus. (you
could call Insight and ask them?)

You probably want to be VERY careful in blindly investing in a LaserJet IIP
for your Mac. The base $1495 model includes only 512KB of RAM and therefore
can't do 300 dpi full-page graphics. You will need at least a 1MB memory
upgrade along with the MacPrint Driver, which could give a total cost of
about $1500. If you really need a laser printer, this would probably be your
cheapest alternative, but if you just want laser QUALITY, you should also
take a look at the HP DeskWriter.
