[comp.sys.mac] Recommendations for tape drive and backup software?

korfhage@lanai.cs.ucla.edu (Willard Korfhage) (09/29/89)

This subject comes up frequently enough that you should send to me
at either the ucla address or at korfhage@pucatt.poly.edu, and I will
sumarize for the net.

We will be getting a number of macs with large disks (150 MB), and need
a backup mechanism. One option is to get 60 or 150 MB tapes for individual
machines, and I would appreciate recommendations for these. Note that
60 MB tapes could be ok with partitioned disks because some partitions
will rarely change and need not be backed up daily.

Another option might be to get a DAT backup that stores 1.2 GB, and
back up everyone's machine on a single tape. Does anyone out there
have experience with DAT tape backups? How feasible is it to put
this on one of a bunch of macs on an ethernet and back them all up
automatically at night? I presume we would need TOPS or PSN so the machine
wiht the tape can get at the disks of the others. Or is there software
that would run on each machine and let them back up to the tape (at
staggered times) without using TOPS or PSN? Experience would be
much appreciated. It seems most desirable to have a central, automatic backup,
but I don't know if it can be done these days.

And if we do have 1.2 GB on a tape, how easy is it to restore a single
file? The mind boggles at wading through a listing of 20,000 files.

Thanks for any help.
