We are interested in upgrading the server on our AppleShare network from a Mac Plus to something with a little better throughput. We also plan to increase our available disk space on the server by adding a volume of 100-200 megabytes. For the record, we have 40-50 users, using a Farallon StarController. No Ethernet hookups yet, but we plan to soon. Two alternatives we've discussed are an SE/30 or a Jasmine DirectServe. Under current "Jasmania" pricing, the latter would save us about $2000. So I'm interested. Do any of you have experience using one of these devices? If so, I have some questions for you. Does it really perform as fast (running AppleShare) as a IIx would, as Jasmine claims? Is it easy to manage the network without a screen or keyboard on the server? Does it support add-on software like QuickMail? And now, the BIG question: is it really stupid to commit our network to something from Jasmine? Can any good thing come out of Army Street? Has anyone tried to get technical support from Jasmine lately and succeeded? Will this thing work, or will it be a big headache? Please send answers/requests/comments to me, and I'll post a summary if there's anything worth posting. Thanks! Dave Votaw Image Processing Lab Jet Propulsion Laboratory dlv059@ipl.jpl.nasa.gov
