[comp.sys.mac] Apple announcement on Sept 27th?

gft_robert@gsbacd.uchicago.edu (09/21/89)

I just got my September issue of "The Active Window", the Boston Computer
Society MUG newsmagazine. In it they have a calendar of BCS Meetings related
to the Mac. This one -- referring to the general BCS meeting (i.e., the BIG
meeting) -- caught my eye:
*******************************
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 27
BCS GENERAL MEETING

"A new product introduction by Apple". In January 1984, Steve Jobs publicly
unveiled the Macintosh computer to members attending the BCS General Meeting at
Boston's John Hancock Hall. In September 1989, BCS*Mac proudly presents the
first public showing of an exciting new development from Apple at the same
historic location. Representatives from Apple's Cupertino headquarters will be
on hand to discuss and demonstrate this milestone product. Watch your mail for
more details. The meeting is sponsored by The BCS, the world's largest user
group.
********************************

Does anyone have any guesses what this might be? I can't imagine that it's the
Portable/IIci rollout, since this is supposedly a "first show". But maybe it
is. Any ideas?

Um, if it *is* the Portable/IIci, Sept 27th won't be the first public
showing.

If the Seybold Publishing Seminar in SF is considered public (and it is
open to all and sundry), the machines were prominently displayed and
demoed today.

If they mean the first user group showing, they may just get scooped
on that too :-).

Of course, perhaps they mean the first public showing at John Hancock
Hall...

What John means is that someone from Apple came by to show off a Mac
Portable tonight at the BMUG meeting. And that there will be a IIci
being showed off in the near future. :-)

The original thread of this was "What's happening at the BCS's 9-27 meeting?"

I got a card in the mail today, which explained that the rollout at the
meeting will be of a Mac Portable.

That's what John was talking about. A man from Apple came by
the BMUG Main Meeting on Thursday the 21st to show off the
Portable. On the 27th, when BCS catches up to BMUG, we'll
have someone come by (in San Francisco) to show off the IIci.

So how is this the first appearance of the Portable? :-)

p.s. BCS is a great group too, in its own way.

The mail promised in the quoted meeting announcement has arrived. An excerpt:

           The Boston Computer Society
            September General Meeting

Come see the debut of the brand new
                Macintosh Portable

ps: I can guess what the M, U, and second G stand for, by the way.
It's only the first G I need help on.
