[comp.sys.mac] Macintosh Stuff For Sale

woods@b17b.UUCP (new user) (09/29/89)

It seems alot of people tried to email to me and it bounced. This is because
I am new to the net and gave a wrong address. Sorry about that. Let's try it
again. The UUNET address is ingr!b17b!woods, the INTERNET address
is b17b!woods@INGR.COM (is this case sensitive, if so, that INGR.COM may need
to be in lower case). Anyway, I did give correct phone numbers and sold
everything but MPW. There has been alot of discussion on MPW, ownership,
and what happens when you try to upgrade. I called the Apple Programmer's
and Developers Association (1-800-282-APDA, APDA->2732) and here is what
they said. There is no lisence, the original disks establish ownership.
To upgrade, you must be a member of APDA. I think it still costs $20 a year,
and you get a quarterly magazine, APDAlog. MPW 2.0.2 is still supported,
there is a 3.0 but it is for larger systems. I had 1 meg on my Mac II and
never ran into any problems. The documentation is pretty good I think,
but unix experience would be helpful. The on-line help is superb. Commands
are cryptic like unix but there is an option to bring up a "Commando"
mac window with all the command options, pipe options, I/O redirection,...
available in clear english for selection through radio buttons, pull-down
menus, ...it's a mac, you can figure it out. As you make your selection,
the cryptic command is built so you can see it, and then execute it.
I don't know how MPW compares to AU/X because I know very little about
AU/X. Disadvantages of AU/X would be cost, and I hear it is huge. Most
people won't have the hardware to run it. Advantages I would guess would
be compatility with other unix software. Perhaps an AU/X expert could
fill us all in...

Anyway, MPW (Version 2.0.2) is still here for the first person willing to
pay $150 + shipping...
