Well, I also have the Seagate 157N (the drive which you are more than likely using if it's 3.5" and 45 Megs) and had a similar problem. My read/write problems occured when trying to use sectors on the upper portions of the drive. And, yes, after a while of getting the errors my system would not recognize the drive AT ALL. The problem, as it turned out, was in the actual SCSI drive suppled on the disk. However, if this is the case in your situation, then a "low-level" format will do absolutely nothing to solve your problem. Oh, you'll be able to use the drive for a while (if you can even get it to format) but the problem will persist. My suggestion to you is this: First, try just updating the driver on the HD. Then try restarting. If the drive is not recognized at all (i.e., will not respond to the SCSI device mounting call), then chances are that you are experiencing a SCSI driver "dump", as it were. At this stage, your only recourse is to send it back to the distributor and ask that they fix it up. As far as I know, there is no way for you to play with the driver yourself... and even if there was it would be VERY dangerous. Bill Taroli WWTAROLI@RODAN.acs.syr.edu
