[comp.sys.mac] DeskWriter Problem

pff@beach.cis.ufl.edu (Pablo Fernicola) (09/28/89)

A friend of mine bought a DeskWriter and a Mac SE last week. We connected the
printer, loaded the DeskWriter driver and fonts, but everytime we print, we
get a message to the effect that the printer doesn't responde. From the Finder,
doing a Print Directory, the message says to check the connections.

Now, we tried to different cables, from different manufacturers, so the problem
is not there. I tried the modem and printer ports by using my modem and they
are okay. I took the system Folder out of the hard disk and went through the
installation process and nothing. Last, my friend went to the store and got
ANOTHER DeskWriter but the problem persist. The guy at the HP Customer
Support was very helpful but we couldn't solve the problem.

Oh yes, we did select the printer on the Chooser.

Anybody has any clues of what can be wrong (Mac, ports, software, cable,
printer, all of the above)?

Thanks!

The DeskWriter puts up the not responding dialog box when the driver fails
to get a response to a status request. The most likely reasons for this are
wrong cable, cable not plugged in completely, or bad logic board on the DW.
Since you tried a new DW, I suspect that the cable may be incorrect. The DW
uses the Standard Apple Peripheral-8 Cable. This cable switches the transmit
and receive lines in the RS-422 interface. You may have a cable that does not
switch these lines. Also, make sure that none of the pins in the cable have
been damaged or pushed back in the connector. The DW needs both + and - lines
on the transmit side to work.

Hope this helps,
