A simple question. Is they any definitive way to determine the memory usage for each init that you have? I have I guess a decent amount of inits that run (Broadcast, Vaccine, AppleShare, ColorFinder, Tops, to name a few) on a IIx, and even with a 128k ram cache, the amount of memory used by the System (as reported by About Finder) is over 1400k. I know Tops uses a fair amount (100k-150k I think), but that still leaves a lot unaccounted for. Stuff like the recently posted Public Folder init/rdev are nice to have, and while I'd prefer to keep it available all the time, if you don't use it that much, I don't know if I would want to allocate 10k, 20k, 50k, who knows how much ram. I know IBM TSR programs (which I guess are sort of equivelent to Mac init's) always listed the amount of ram they used (in their docs), besides having utility programs which mapped out the amount and location of ram for each. I would think a similar thing for Mac's would be very useful. Jeff White University of Pennsylvania jeff@eniac.seas.upenn.edu

Tattle Tale INIT written by Bob Hablutzel writes a log file that records all of the INITs executed during your Mac's boot sequence. For each INIT, Tattle Tale records the filename, the INIT name, the amount of above-BufPtr memory acquired by the init, the amount of time used by the INIT, and a flag indicating whether the INIT has locked itself into the system heap. Tattle Tale is shareware; a contribution of $5 is suggested. Available from sumex-aim.stanford.edu via anonymous ftp as ./info-mac/init/tattletale.hqx Hope this helps, Avi Avi Carmi (carmi@mars.jpl.nasa.gov)

I believe that Aask from CE Software makes a guess at how much memory each INIT will use, and puts that number under the icon for each in the selection window. I also seem to recall Leonard Rosenthal mentioning that the next INITPicker will do the same....I may be wrong there. The other thing to do is find the "TattleTale" INIT, which produces a text file of all INITs on your system, how many ticks they took to execute, how much memory they used, whether they are locked in the heap, etc, etc. .-----------------------------------------------------------------------------. | UUCP: {rosevax, crash, orator}!orbit!pnet51!pj | Working with idiots keeps | | ARPA: crash!orbit!pnet51!pj@nosc.mil | my life interesting... | | INET: pj@pnet51.cts.com | | `-----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

It's not, it's part of, I believe, their Mock Package Plus Utilities, which is a commercial release. What I'd heard (and this was some months ago) was that the copies in circulation as shareware were really unauthorized copies. Just thought you should know. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- joe houghtaling jh0576@leah.albany.edu
