[comp.sys.mac] Dumb Modem + Mac

biswa@janus.Berkeley.EDU (Biswa Ghosh) (10/04/89)

I have a dumb modem at home (manual dial) which I currently use with
a terminal to log in to school. Will I be able to use the same modem
with a Mac, using some communication software like Microphone II? Or
am I doomed to buy a Hayes-compatible?

No, you are not doomed... i dont think...

I have a beta version of Red Ryder Host 11.0 which of course, i really
shouldn't have, and i must set my clock a year earlier so it will work, but
nevertheless, it is an excellent program. But in response to your post,
RRH 11 has a method for CONFIGURING the modem command to your type of modem.

It will probably help if you have some kind of documentation for the dumb
modem you are using, and you'll also have to wait for this general release...
but relax... there IS HOPE :-)

(speaking of RRH, see my next article...)

MicroPhone and MicroPhone II (since you specifically asked about them)
will work just fine with a manual dial modem. The only thing that you will not
be able to do (for obvious reasons) is have MP/MPII dial for you. All other
aspects of the application are functional (including scripting and xfers).
For general information, all of the commercial comm programs will also
work with this modem, they just won't dial it. You may want to be careful about
SmartCom II as it does not like 'direct connect' mode (it has modes, the others
don't) and will not give you access to some funcionality.

As I mentioned in my previous responce to this question, you can do
this with Red Ryder, MicroPhone, etc. but you will not be able to dial.
The reason I am repeating myself on this one is that the Mr. Silverberg
has a misunderstanding of the 'modem configuration mechanism' in RR and I
would like to correct it. What RR 11.0 gives one is something that, in
MicroPhone II we refer to as 'Modem Drivers'. They are basically scripts which
control how to DIAL, HangUp and have the modem autoAnswer. Since you have a
'dumb' modem these drivers do ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD!

Hope that clears things up for both you and Mr. Silverberg.

Hi folks,

Thanks for all the replies! The unanimous decision is that yes, I
will be able to use my dumb modem with most of the communications
software, definitely with RR and MicrophoneII. And, naturally, I
will have to do the dialing myself.

Oh, god yes... i am 'enlightened' now. Thank you for setting me
straight Mr. Rosenthol.

My god, WHAT would the mac world do without you! (probably still continue
on the same...)
