[comp.sys.mac] SE Power Supply repair?

aras@ecerl2.ncsu.edu (10/07/89)

My Mac Se power supply has been exhibiting a very strange symptom for
sometime now: If the case temperature is less than about 75F, the power
supply takes time to startup. For example, if its 60F outside, it took 3
Hours! Sometimes the blow dryer seems to be the only way to wake it up.

After opening up the power supply, I found that there is a vertical board
which is the temperature sensitive part of the supply. Seeing that I could
not repair it my self, I have called several places and got the
following responses:

MY LOCAL AUTHOURTIZED APPLE SERVICE CENTER :
This is actually the NC State's Hardware services center, their labor rates
are lower than the market (I hope).

their response: $155 for power supply exchange + labor, total expected to
be around $200.

MAYA COMPUTER - VERMONT (Advertised in the back of MAcWorld)

Repair may cost $100-150, exchange, about 175.

Seeing the IBM Power supply prices around $50, I am wondering why i) the
replacement cost is so expensive, considering that the SE supply is not
radically different than any of the others ii) There are any less expensive
alternatives to this problem?

Any help will be appreciated

The SE supply is not radically different???????
The Mac power supply as they are called is actually the
"Analog Board" - it contains the power supply, the video
circuitry, and (perhaps?? ) the sound amplifier(?)
(still overpriced IMHO)
I haven't seen any prices signifigantly better than those you
quoted, however.

I have, and last week I found one locally at around 9pm in the
evening in a garage on a farm, went to visit at midnight, and
got my 2 zinged power-supplies fixed by 2am.

	nothing like a friendly hardware-hacker with a parts-supply
who does these things for a living for the stores in the area
and who, like me, seems to come alive at night...

I asked him and he is willing to do similar services for my
netfriends that I'd care to refer to him. Given my experience,
I know you'll be pleased by the cost, which shipping included can
run anywhere between $50 and $90, depending on parts needed ...

make a note of his phone-number (512)345-4339 and tell him that
you are one of Werner's Usenet friends (just so he knows how you
found out about him, and so you get the best price - which I
insisted on as it is business generated at no advertising cost to
him - an argument I have used on several businesses which I then
told the net about). Otherwise, I am only a satisfied customer
and have no other contact or connection to whatever repair deal
you might make - and the only people I am willing to help with
repair arrangements are netfolks who live in the far corners of
the world and have to deal with special problems such as customs
and long-distance shipping. Why? I've lived in the jungle and
the island and the oil-camp and wished there had been computer
networks then to find a "netfriend" willing to help with such
	hassles ...

			Cheers, ---Werner

Caglan M. Aras writes of places he's looked into to get his SE power
supply (analog board) fixed/replaced:

>MAYA COMPUTER - VERMONT (Advertised in the back of MAcWorld)

Well, let me vouch for Maya Computer. I know those people, and would
trust them with any machinery Apple dares to sell. Whatever Maya says,
you can believe. I don't work for them or anything, I just happen to know
one of the honchos there.
