Anybody knows the spec. details of Mac IIx? I've heard that it has come out
recently. Specification details which are speed, improvement from MacII
and any other thing you can think of.

I appreciate all the informations you can give.

There were some messages on BIX the last couple of days which indicated
that BYTE Magazine's tests indicated a performance/speed improvement of
zero percent to 20 percent depending on the class of problem undertaken.
The conclusion was that the improvement was not particularly notable.

If you just happen to have optimized your code for the 68030/68882, you
can manage a 30% improvement. Your code will look awfully funny, because
you'll have to arrange it to get the maximum 882 and 030 instruction
concurrency. (The 882 is much better at executing more than one instruction
at once than the 881.) In general (i.e., if you take a plain old Mac II
program and run it on the IIx), we agree with the benchmarks we've seen,
usually around the 15% faster range.

Okay, now that the Mac IIci is the powerhouse of the family, the
question is what about the rest of us? Apple has announced that
there will be an upgrade from a IIcx, but what about those
(including myself) who bought the first 030 Mac II, the IIx?

I am hoping that Apple isn't going to strand us without any sort
of improvements. The capabilities that I would like to see made
available are:

    25 MHz processors
    512K ROM's
    Burst mode capabilities
    Cache card connector

Now I can understand that burst mode and caching may take nothing
less than a completely new logic board to implement, which might
not be economical. Also, there are third party processor upgrades.
But, how about at least a ROM upgrade? After all, I've got these
really neat ROM SIMMs that are supposed to make ROM upgrades a
snap. Right?

You might be interested in a rumor that Mac The Knife was spreading
in MacWeek a couple of weeks ago.

He said that Apple is RUMORED to be coming out w/ with a IIxi this
spring sometime. If I recall, he mentioned 33MHz and a quicker NuBus.

Sorry, I don't remember which issue of MacWeek it was in.
