[comp.sys.mac] In search of an honest hard disk

long@rainbo.enet.dec.com (Richard Long) (10/02/89)

Greetings,

Lately (just from postings here) it seems as if hard drives have been dropping
like flies (or is this paranoia?).

Since I'm currently looking to replace the INTERNAL hard drive in my SE with a
higher capacity unit, I find this somewhat disconcerting. So, the question:
What to buy, if anything? I'm looking for something in the 60MB range, quiet,
fast, and cheap (mutually exclusive, right?). I was thinking about the 45MB
from Ehman ($449), but that's a little small. Is there any company that's
currently recommended? How about GCC?

Appreciate any help,
Rich

p.s. e-mail if you like, I'll summarize.

I may have not seen the latest and greatest of hard drives, but I'm not aware
of any 60Mb HD that's in 3.5" format. The only problem with sticking a HD
internally in an SE is that there's little room left for a 3.5 mounted either
in the floppy bay or vertically, let alone for a 5.25" drive. I understand
that it would be a literal impossibility.

The HD that I have, a 46Mb 157N Seagate, had operated flawlessly since I had a
bad SCSI driver replaced. This shouldn't give you the impression that Seagate
drives are bad, nothing could be further from the truth, but the problem was
the software written by the distribution company that I purchased the drive
from...

As far as price goes, I don't know what they are in general for 157N's, but I
payed $650 - $700 for mine when I purchased it a while back.

Just got a 67MB Rodime 3.5" HD to replace my failed apple Segate 60MB that
replaced my failed apple 40MB (Quantum?). Two weeks on it so far with
super performance (Faaaaaaaaast, Quiet). I know better than to trust
it too far, though. I will not totally trust a hard drive until they
take out that little spinning thing in the middle...
