[comp.sys.mac] Public Folder RDEV doesn't install???

peter@aucs.uucp (Peter Steele) (10/13/89)

I downloaded the new Public Folder init/rdev and set it up on two separate
machines. At first it worked fine. Then for no reason that I know it has
stopped working on both machines. When booting, the icon appears with an
X through it, which normally happens when you hold the shift key down
during boot. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

From what I did see of Public Folder in it's working state, it's a nice
little utility. I would like to see passwords added and the ability to
design "groups". And of course, it would be nicer if a volume is added
to the desktop when you select someone else's remote public folder.

That's all.

My first guess on what's happening is that the designated folder has changed
name or location. If PF can't find the designated "Public" folder (called
"Public" unless customized to something else), it doesn't install the
server code since there is no folder to make available to anyone.

Other reasons the X-ed out icon is draw (meaning no server was installed) -
(2) shift key or mouse button were held down at startup time
(3) AppleTalk is turned off on this machine
(4) PF can't open the ".MPP" driver
(5) some other problem opening a socket or registering a name.

I'd still guess that it's the first explaination.

If you need further assistance give me a call...

The X through the Public Folder ICON will also occur if there is no
"Public" folder (or whatever name is in your configuration) on your disk.
