I thought Apple had already announced that they were putting FCMTs (Finder CoMmenTs) in the actual associated files in 7.0--meaning that the comments would survive rebuilding the desktop. I got that impression from the following Q&A and the subsequent net.discussion: Q: How does the Desktop Manager improve performance of large disks? A: Currently, desktop information (file icons and comments) ^^^^^^^^ is stored in an invisible Desktop file. Because of the current ^^^^^^^ implementation, there is a limit of approximately 2,000 entries in the desktop file and, more importantly, performance becomes sluggish long before the maximum number of entries is reached. The new Desktop implementation removes this size restriction and greatly improves performance in all cases. So did I just imagine that it had been made official?
