[comp.sys.mac] Stuffit-strange problem

phil@vaxphw.enet.dec.com (Phil Hunt) (10/17/89)

Hi,

I have started seeing a strange problem with Stuffit 1.5.1 on my 5mb
Mac II. When I unstiff things, I notice it now does it in 'slow motion'.

I mean, The completion guages flicker at me in stead of quickly updating as
each section of a file is completed....It seems to be taking about 10 times the
normal time to unstuff a file.....

I haven't added any new INITs, this just started happening...Any ideas?

I've noticed that this happens when you've got the "allow background"
item checked in stuffit's preferences dialog.

go to preferences and un-check this item and you'll be up and running
fast again in no time.

  hope this helps.

[slowdown of Stuffit observed]

The "Allow Background Tasks" option is checked in the Preferences...
menu item under the Option menu. Uncheck it to revert to the speed you
are used to.

On a related note: I would expect Stuffit to perform almost as well
with this option checked as without if no other programs are using CPU
cycles in the background. This is not the case, though. Does anyone
have any clues why?

Phil, I don't know if this is related, since you don't say if your II has an
FDHD in it, but I have noticed that StuffIt literally CREEPS when I unStuff
files to my SE/30's FDHD.
Same files unStuffed to an 800K floppy in the FDHD work fine--I should
clarify and say it is slow to 1.4 MEG disks *only*. Has anyone else seen this
behavior?
