[comp.sys.mac] Screen Savers

news@iex.UUCP (Netnews Handler) (04/12/89)

We recently bought some big screen monitors for a few of our Macintoshes.
I've looked at a few screen saver programs (Pyro, Dimmer) and found that
they work fine on the dinky screens of the SE and Plus, but behave
*unusually* on the big screens. Are newer versions of these products
available that will work on bigger monitors? My E-machine Z21 comes with
a screen saver built in, but we need something that will run on
the Moniterms.

Any suggestions are welcome.

We have a bunch of large monitors around here, and the latest incarnation of
Pyro! (3.3?) does just great (thanks, Steve!)...

The latest version of the Moire cdev screensaver works well with all
large monitors I've seen to date. It will sometimes interact oddly
with other INITs and cdevs, which require that it be renamed to
!moire or zmoire to alter the installation order. I like it for
its ability to be customized somewhat (speed, number of moire lines,
geometrical shapes) and for how fast it runs even on large monitors.
Oh, yes, it will sometimes cause programs that don't redraw the
screen properly to require a user act to force a redraw after it
engages and clears, but I don't think that's Moire's fault.

Moire should be available by ftp from several sites; if not,
it can be obtained from your local user group.

Moire ScreenSaver by John Lim is a shareware program. If you like it
and use it, send $10 to

	18, Nottingwood Street,
	Doncaster East, Victoria, 3109,
	Australia.

I am currently using version 2.22 and thinks its clock is its best feature.
One bug is that some programs have trouble redrawing the screen. If this
happens you just place the cursor in the top-right corner for immediate
dimming and back on the screen again. This causes the program to redraw
the screen. I have found no problem other than this with software that
is multifinder compatible. I do not use software that is not multifinder
compatible.

Hi, can anybody send me a "screen saver" program. Please e-mail to me.
If you can tell me where I can get PD screen-savers, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

I also upgraded to Moire 3.0 and, though I enjoy the Dyson's Folly pattern,
I dislike a bug I have gotten on my SE/30 as well as on a friend's Plus.
About 5-10 minutes of running, the screen saver will jump to the 'options
screen' (as if you had hit the space bar). The options will stay there
for about a second and the the pattern will return. HOWEVER, the first
x lines (where x is the number of lines you have set in your prefs) do not
get erased as the pattern moves on! So that in effect you get a snapshot of
the pattern that sits there while the pattern moves on its merry way.
I find it most annoying, and have seen other computers on campus that
showed the same problem (though a Mac II w/ color monitor didn't...)
I've fiddled with it and can find no solution.

I've seen this bug as well. It doesn't happen on any of the Mac IIs I've
installed it on, but it happens on all the Pluses and SEs. The bug is,
however, unique to the Dyson's Folly pattern, so I just don't use that
pattern on the Pluses and SEs. It's not exactly a solution, of course.

Still, I like Moire 3.0 a lot.

I also have found some bugs in Moire 3.0. I have a full page display running
on a Mac II. In certain situations after Moire has restored a blanked screen,
desktop icons, such as the trash can, are not redrawn (area is left grey).
A few moments ago, Moire actually crashed on me (gave me a bus error via
TMON). Moire had turned on, I pressed space bar and then clicked the mouse
and got the bus error. I had to reboot.

[On an aside, is there a way to recover from bus errors in TMON?]

I have seen this problem on my Mac IIx with a monochrome monitor but not
on my Mac II with a color monitor. Both are running 6.0.4. Seems to be
directly related to the video being monochrome...
