I am having a strange hard disk problem. A program I was running crashed with an ID=02 just as I was quitting. After rebooting, the hard disk was no longer visible and I had to boot from floppy. Disk First Aid repaired the problem and all the files seem intact. However, the mac SE will no longer boot from the hard disk. I've replaced the system folder but no change. Any ideas? I don't want to reformat :-( Paul H. Steele USENET: {uunet|watmath|utai|garfield}!dalcs!aucs!Paul Acadia University BITNET: Paul@Acadia Wolfville, NS CANADA B0P 1X0 (902) 542-2201x587

I don't want to reformat :-( This happened to me once. While you now have a hard disk with a proper system and finder on it, your boot block 0 on the hard disk has been trashed. Ergo, the system does not recognize it at boot time, and your disk is not a start-up disk. Not to worry. Whenever a system is copied onto a disk THAT DOES NOT ALREADY HAVE A SYSTEM on it, it recreates the boot block. Simply remove the system and finder from that hard disk (saving it elsewhere if you wish). Reboot to be sure, but I'm not sure this matters. Then, copy the system back onto the hard disk, and make the finder the start-up application on that disk (also probably not necessary). Now, I'm not 100% certain of that sequence. The point is, the problem descrip- tion is accurate, and there exists a methodology short of reinitializing the entire disk. If your disk is a DataFrame, then SuperMac's help phone will probably be able to walk you through this - they did for me and I was VERY appreciative. -- -Brian Diehm (SDA - Standard Disclaimers Apply) Tektronix, Inc. briand@tekig4.TEK.COM or {decvax,cae780,uw-beaver}!tektronix!tekig4!briand

Help! I have a PCPC HD21 which has had a software crash. It was daisy-chained to an accelerated MAC+ and Jasmine 80 and the computer froze while trying to copy files onto the HD21. I rebooted in unaccelerated mode, successfully transferred the files, rebooted with the HD21 alone, ran a program, quit and it froze again. From thenceforth, I cannot read the HD21. I have tried Disk First Aid which "can't read Macbottom disk"& SUM's HD Scanner which doesn't find some crucial files. Does anyone know of anything else to try or of someone who will do this comerically? Needless to say, my staff and I have made many belated backup pledges (how do you show a painful grin?). Thanks. Hi, I am having some trouble with my Photon 40 Megabyte hard drive. It refuses to show up on the desktop i.e. it refuses to mount. This problem happened once in the past but then I was able to correct it by clearing the PRAM. Today all methods have failed. I have tried connecting it to a Mac Plus and a Mac ][, but both of them have problems recognizing it. The hard disk had been working fine for 1 1/2 years. I am using the latest System and Finder. I have tried removing the battery and tried using SCSI cdev also. Can somebody help me? Thanks in advance. Rajiv. Fellow Netters I have been experiencing unusual problems from my 40 Meg internal SCSI hard disk lately. Whenever I turn on my MAC II, my hard disk boots and after awhile a message flashes across stating that the HD requires minor repairs and ask for permission to continue. If I click the OK box, the machine turns for a long time and gives me the finder after awhile but if I click cancel box, the machine reboots. This also happens when I shutdown the machine and it demands that I allow it to perform a minor repair work on the hard disk. I would appreciate if you could provide some explainations on what is going on. Thanks in advance Jeff Chau jchau@girtab.usc.edu
