I recently got to play with a Macintosh Portable. Yes, it suffers from the five well known "Too"s: = Too heavy = Too big = Too small a disk = Too little RAM = Too expensive. No surprise yet. The surprise is the screen. Everybody says how great the screen is, sort of how everybody says how fast Adobe Type Manager is. What that means is that it is still hard to read, but not *that* hard to read (or, that you have to wait for ATM, but not *that* long). My sad conclusion is that it needs to be back lit. Add the screen to the five "Too"s and the bottom line is that I would not want the Portable as my only Macintosh--even against my lowly Plus. That if someone gave me a Portable I would keep it, but if someone gave the CASH I would *not* use it to buy a Portable. When I go back to Minnesota for Christmas I will miss my Macintosh, but I don't think I would miss it enough to want to lug one of these. Do I still want a laptop Mac? Yes! But I think I will wait for the next one. Maybe they will hire some Walkman designers from Japan first.
