I sometimes prepare documents in my house using SE/30 and ImageWriter II, and produce final output at my office using with LaserWriter Plus. Recently I installed ATM, and found some interesting behavior in Courier family. First, all the images of "smart open quote" (code $d4) in bitmap font go from up-left to down-right, but ATM-generated image go from down-left to up-right. They look like: bitmap font ATM-generated image ***** *** **** *** *** *** ** **** When I print the document at my house, all quotes go from down-left to up-right (ATM-generated image) even if I install double-size bitmaps. Next, at my office, when I try to print the document from a Mac II, which is directly connected to the LaserWriter Plus, it uses built-in font and the quotes go from down-left to up-right, just like the image in the bitmap fonts. To my surprise, when I capture the PostScript output by cmd-F and send it to LaserWriter via UNIX, plain Courier has up-left to down-right quotes, and all variations of Courier font (Bold, Oblique, and Bold-Oblique) have down-left to up-right quotes. Looking carefully, I noticed that the typefaces themselves are slightly different from built-in version, with square ends instead of round ends at each stroke. I think Adobe used different version of Courier font in ATM than they used in building bitmaps or LaserWriter Plus. If it is a matter of taste, I prefer going from up-left to down-right (bitmap style). But the real problem is how we can maintain WYSIWYG using ATM? They look like: Laborious discussion of WYSIWYG deleted. Benzanson spoke at length on the fact that many of the fonts distributed with ATM fix problems with the fonts resident in the LaserWriter ROM. An open single quote should look like bottom-left to upper-right. However, if you wish to maintain commonality, you can install the Courier family downloadable font files that came with ATM onto your machine at work. Those fonts will be downloaded when the file prints and look just like your original. BTW, we just got ATM here and I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. The printing output is great (I'm impressed there), but the screen versions don't really blow me out. The Symbol and Times are noticeably better, but the Helvetica and Courier aren't that much better. I guess the real advantage is having any size available when you want it (ie. since no 72 point Helvetica is available, ATM makes it look better and odd-sized fonts are better too). It would be nice if ATM could verify its existence by somehow making the system believe that all font sizes are available so all the font sizes are outlined in Font menus. That would be neato. On the whole, probably worth $57 (MacConnection price). If I get desparate for Palatino, I might get the Plus Pack. -- Jeffrey A.
