[comp.sys.mac] Spooler Question

consp22@bingsuns.pod.binghamton.edu (Darren Handler) (10/27/89)

I am one of the few satisfied ImageWriter LQ owners. The quality and color
sort of makes up for the speed. I know that system 7 will background it, is
there anything out there now that will background the printer. The spooler
that came with my PCPC drive only seems to work with an Imagewriter I or II.
Any ideas anybody?

I have recently discovered and started playing with an INIT called MultiSpool.
It is by Giuseppe Carnevale of Napoli, Italy. It is a hybrid
INIT/DA/application that installs at startup time as an INIT, is accessed as a
DA, and runs background printing as an Application! How does he do that??
In any case, it seems to work very nicely on my INIT-laden SE/30 under
System 6.0.4. The DA allows you to monitor and alter the print queue. Files
are spooled to a folder in the System Folder, and printing can be suspended
and resumed at will.
It seems to be very MF friendly--more often that not IT will pause, rather
than grinding your application to a halt. I have noticed that it appears to
flush the event queue when it has to access the spooled files from
disk--keystrokes and mouse clicks simultaneous to disk access will be lost.
Other than that, it looks to be very stable at version 1.0.
